Surfing crazy cat....

I am happy to announce that I am now also an owner of the crazy cat stamps by Tim Holtz.
One of the cats immediately triggered an idea in my head..that is crazy..
Sometimes I do get crazy ideas, but getting them on paper is a different thing. Sometimes it doesn't turn out quite like I invisioned. Luckily this time...IT DID!

So I give to you Gnarly, the surfing cat!

This card turned out exactly how I planned it. Normally my projects have a life of their own and sometimes turn out completely different. But this turned out exactly how it looked in my head.

Here are the steps I took to make this:

I stamped the cat image on water color card stock with stazon ink. After that dried I painted the cat with a liquid mask.

I used my MISTI to stamp the Koi by Nicole Wright Designs, on top of the cat. And that was also covered with a liquid mask.

I painted the background with tumbled glass distress ink and a water brush. While that was drying I mixed up a dollop of clear embossing paste by Wendy Vecchi with some tumbled glass reinker. I wanted to emulate waves, as you need waves to surf hahaha.
That took FOREVER to dry!! I dried it using my heat it tool, put it on our woodburner and even under the heat lamp of our turtles!! You can guess by now that I am an extremely impatient crafter.. Anyway... after about 10 hours of drying it was dry enough to proceed...

I gently rubbed off the rubber mask and made sure all traces were gone. At this point I was still not sure what colour the cat was going to be. So I inked the Koi first as that was going to be orange anyway. The cat was either going to be grey or green.. I needed a good contrast between the fish and the cat. After the Koi was orange I decided to give the cat a bold colour too and painted the little surfer cracked pistachio. Gnarly is not your everyday cat you see hahahaha. I decided to give him a few beige parts to break it up. After that all dried I dabbed the peaks of the waves with pearl paint dabbers and my fingers to create the look of foam heads on the waves. It has to look like surf!!!

I inked the edge of the card with walnut stain distress ink and covered the eyes with glossy accents, and last but not least I stamped the sentiment with one of my alphabet stamps.
I am quite proud of how it turned out. Gnarly looks like he is enjoying himself  :-) :-)

Thank you for stepping by and I hope you visit again.

Take care,
Freddie

  3. Awww this made my morning. Such a fun card with those Crazy Cats. Thank you for the step by step instructions also. We do not have any craft stores locally and I miss going to classes, so I appreciate your kindness. I bought the masking product a few weeks ago and have not used it yet. I'm thinking it may be one of our new best friends. LOL Again, great work and have a nice weekend. I even signed up to get your newsletter.

    1. Thank you for your kind words Marchelle, I love my liquid mask! I do have stick on masks for most of my stamps, but sometimes the image is too intricate. So this is the perfect solution. You will love it!! Thank you for taking the time to visit my blog :-)
